The state of West Virginia is the only state in the Union to have acquired its sovereignty by proclamation of the President.  The worlds largest sycamore tree is located in Webster Springs.  West Virginia's nickname is the Mountain State and its motto is "Mountaineers Are Always Free".  The last public hanging in West Virginia was held in Jackson County in 1897.  The first brick street laid in the world was in Charleston, West Virginia on the 23rd of October, 1870.
