The first President of Auburn University was Reverend William J. Sasnett.  The school opened its's doors in 1859 hosting 80 students.  Due to its location and timely opening, Auburn closed its doors to students and faculty because of the Civil war.  The campus was used by the Confederate army as a training ground as well as a hospital for the wounded confederate soldiers.
