In 1924, the National Hockey league was convinced by Charles Adams to expand into the United States and grant him a franchise for the city of Boston.  Charles Adams hired Art Ross as the GM and asked him to come up with a nickname for the franchise.  Ross came up with the Bruin name due to its old English word meaning brown bear which was a ferocious animal in folktales around the Boston area.  The colors of the team came from Adams' grocery store colors.
