The beginnings of Central Florida University came about after John F. Kennedy's speech regarding the goals of the USA accomplishing a manned space flight to the moon by the end of the decade.  With an increase in the space program in Cape Canaveral, many started lobbying for the creation of a new University.  In January, 1964, 1000 acres were purchased to be the site of a new university.
