The state of Indiana hosted the first professional baseball game in Fort Wayne on May 4th, 1871.  Indiana held the first long distance auto race in 1911, at the Indiana Motor Speedway.  The word Indiana means Land of the Indians.  Even though Indiana has 40 miles worth of shoreline with Lake Michigan it is still considered a Great Lakes State.  Richard Gatling was the from Indianapolis and created the rapid fire machine gun.
