The United States formed this division of the armed forces on August 4, 1790.  The Coast Guard is known for its Cutter Services on the open seas and the Great Lakes.  Its primary duties are Coastal Defense, Maritime Law Enforcement and Search and Rescue.  The Coast Guard employee’s over 42,000 active personnel and over 7,800 reserve personnel.  The Coast Guard also has 205 aircraft, 1,850 boats and 244 cutters. 

The most recognized Coast Guard aircraft is the MH-65 Dolphin built by Aerospatiale Eurocopter.  The Dolphin boasts a cost of $9 million and has been in service since 1985.
