The Carolina Hurricanes began their franchise in November in 1971 as the New England Whalers.  Because of scheduling difficulties the owners of the hockey club moved the team to Hartford, Connecticut in 1974.  Up until 1997, the team played in Hartford but moved to the Research Triangle area of North Carolina and renamed the club to the Carolina Hurricanes.
